Water Softener Myths Debunked

By Austin Water SolutionsWater QualityNovember 9, 2020November 9, 2020

Homeowners hear a lot of things about water softeners. Some of them are true, and others may be misleading. It is essential to check out the myths and get to know the right information before getting a water softener. Water treatment involves removing hard minerals. A medium rich in sodium ions are fitted in water softeners to attract the water hardness minerals. The medium acts as an ion exchange that attracts calcium and magnesium, it contributes to water hardness. Here are some of the water softening myths that have been debunked:

  1. Water softeners increase salt content in water.
It is not true. You will need water softening salt to remove calcium and magnesium from the water, but you will not have to taste the salt. The softening salt is put in a special medium in the water softener to attract hard water minerals. You will enjoy clean drinking water free from any minerals after you decide to install the water softener.
  2. Sodium in softened water is too high.
It is a myth. In most cases, the amount of sodium that will be added to your water is too small to affect the water. There is a small amount of sodium, but generally, the effects will lead to more benefits. Soft water worked well in cleaning your clothes. You may have to install a reverse osmosis system to clean the water if you prefer installing a unit that will clean the water in your home so that you can enjoy drinking fresh-tasting water.
  3. Water softeners are used to purify water.
The water softeners do not purify your tap water. They are designed to remove the hardness of your water. If you waste a lot of soap when cleaning utensils or clothes in your home, you will need a water softener. It is highly effective in removing hard chemicals from your water to have soft water for cleaning. For water purification, you may have to install a reverse osmosis unit in your home.
  4. Water softening removes healthy minerals from the drinking water.
Hard minerals such as calcium and magnesium are required in the body. When you apply a water softener, it will remove the minerals in their organic state. The minerals required in the body are organic. Plants can absorb the inorganic mineral and convert them to organic to be utilized in the body. When you remove the organic minerals from water, you are making your family enjoy healthy drinking water.
  5. Soft water can leave a film on the skin after bathing.
People feel a slimy sensation after they shower or baht ion soft water; they mistake it to be soap or even a slimy film. The fact is that you are having a film of natural essential oils on your body. The soft water cleans perfectly to remove all salts left on your body when you usually shower using hard water.
  6. Water softeners are expensive.
You may have to pay a high price for a good water softener. The high cost will be recovered in the long run because you will use less electricity when you heat soft water. Your water heater will last longer, making you recover the money you sued to install the water softener.
